GERD Medication

When the symptoms of Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease starts recurring and the patient goes to the Doctor for treatment and advice , the doctor may recommend over the counter antacids which can be purchased without prescription or the doctor may prescribe medications for stopping acid production or help muscles for proper functioning to ease out the problem.

Normally, over the counter antacids are recommended as the first drug to relieve the heartburn and other mild GERD symptoms. These antacids are marketed in different brand name but consists of three basic salts viz. magnesium, calcium and aluminum with hydroxide and bicarbonate ions to neutralize the acids in the stomach. However, these antacids have side effects. Magnesium salt may cause diarrhea, and aluminum salts may cause constipation. Often these two salts are combined in a single product to balance these effects. Calcium Carbonate antacids when used may compliment calcium but may be also cause constipation.

Foaming agents may be used to cover stomach contents with foam to prevent reflux. These drugs are only suitable to those whose esophagus is not damaged .

The following types are normally prescribed by the Doctor for GERD patients:

H2 Blockers impede acid production and are also available over the counter which should not be used more than a few weeks at any time. These drugs can provide short term relief.

Proton Pump Inhibitor is the other prescription drug which is used frequently. It blocks formation of acid in the stomach, which can heal erosive esophagitis and relieve heartburn symptoms due to GERD.The PPI are more effective than H2 blockers and can relieve anyone who has GERD symptoms.

Prokinetics are sometime prescribed by the doctor in special cases and that too rarely. These drugs help strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter and makes stomach empty faster. It also improves muscle action in the digestive tract. These drugs use is restricted since it has lot of side effects.

GERD is a chronic disease and may need life long treatment to prevent relapses.
