Acid Reflux Treatment
Fortunately for everybody, there are many treatments available for Acid Reflux or GERD patients. Some of the treatment options are given below:
- Life style changes or medications for those who may be at the initial stage of the disease. For infrequent and short term attacks of acid reflux, people go for antacids as quick remedy. But, these are very short term relief and long term remedy should be sought. A patient of Acid Reflux should maintain a diary and note which are the food items causing specifically these troubles. Many people found beneficial results by eliminating the food item from their food intake list which are causing acidity.
- Frequent relapse of the problems and increase of severity of the disease may lead to the Drug therapy. There are drugs, which are available over the counter or through prescription like PPI or Proton Pump Inhibitors. The drug works by inhibiting the production of stomach acid. Another drug H2 Blockers are from different drug family, which is very much in use by patients who are long term sufferers. These drugs are found to be quite effective and have very little side effects. However, for those who do not find these two drugs are not effective for their more severe form of trouble, may have to take more radical drugs like promotility agents which is having serious side effects and normally not prescribed by the Doctor.
- Failure of the Drug therapy may call for the reviewing the case for surgical option. New developments in surgical procedures are constantly coming up for specific treatment of GERD patients viz. Endocinch, Enteryx Procedure etc.
- The latest surgical procedure, a laparoscopic procedure, in which a small tube is inserted in the abdomen of the patient, have become very successful and becoming popular for the treatment and cure of GERD patients. It is seen even in the most severe form of heartburn, it has shown high success rate of cure by this surgical procedure.
