Acid Infant Reflux Symptoms

Gastro esophagus reflux takes place when contents inside the stomach comes back into esophagus after taking food. Ring of muscles at the bottom of the esophagus opens and closes to facilitate food to enter stomach. These rings of muscles are called lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES opens to release gas after taking food by infants, adults or children. However, when the sphincter opens in infant, the stomach contents go up and into the esophagus and gets vomited through mouth. This phenomenon may also takes place whenever infants cry, cough or strain. The infants are quite healthy and normal irrespective of the incidence of such spits or vomits. Normally, infants experience Acid reflux in first three months of their life. With Acid reflux, an infant may experience the symptoms like: vomiting , spitting, coughing, poor feeding, irritability and blood in the stool. Normally, most of the children stop spitting or vomiting after attaining 12 months to 18 months. In very rare cases, the Acid Reflux may result in the infant to show serious symptoms like poor health growth, irritability, blood loss from acid burning esophagus, breathing problem.

One must remember, that such symptoms in infants may take place also in diseases  other than GERD The concerned Child specialist should be consulted if the following symptoms are observed:

• Vomiting large quantity in forceful manner and ejected through mouth in a projectile form (particular if the infant is less than 2 months old)
• Vomiting fluid which is green or yellow in color
• Breathing difficulty after vomiting
• Irritability related to feeding causing concern about the general state of health ot the infant due to poor food intake
• Difficult or painful swallowing

Finally, an infant who spits or vomits after taking food, may or may not have gastroesophagus reflux. The doctor will examine the child and if he is healthy , no test or treatment is needed.
